Was that a reference to Adolf Hitler

In the beginning part of the movie, the German officer dismissed someone named Adolf with the Hitler's haircut. Did anyone catch that? The scene was very brief. Was that a reference to Adolf Hitler?

Show me the holes!

reply

The cameo of the young Hitler is by the director, Philippe de Broca. He comes in and says something I cannot catch in German that is subtitled as "Colonel, my Ideology!", to which Colonel von Krack replies, "Later, Adolf, later". This was WWI, so his ideas are being dismissed for a later time.

reply

Yes, yes it was.

Officer, I saw the driver who hit me. His name was Johnny Walker

It is indeed supposed to be Hitler, although photos taken of him as a soldier in World War I show him with a full mustache, with very pronounced curls.

But isn't that interesting in an antiwar movie?

They put one of the most notorious and evil characters of all time - before his rise to power - in this movie. I don't think many would argue that the Allies should not have entered WWII to stop Hitler.

So here he is - probably one of the most valid reasons to go to war of all time - placed in an antiwar movie.

What is the point that is being made? That war is insane - but it may be necessary?

A popular belief for a long time after World War II was that none of it would have happened if not for World War I. In sum, while Hitler was going to be a nasty, bitter guy no matter what the external circumstances, World War I created the material that allowed him to twist a nation to his will.
