This story is about a French director who is releasing his recently-panned movie for free around France. He is doing this in hopes of gaining fans and gaining distrust towards critics.

Funny thing is, this happened in 1966 with THE KING OF HEARTS. Sadly, the ploy didn't work. It is a shame, especially since it is so highly revered today.

Are you saying that KOH was panned by the critics when it first came out in 1966? I have no knowledge of its history, having discovered this film in college in the late 70's.

I've always wondered why it isn't more well known.

"King of Hearts" did bombin France but it was a BIG hit in the US when it was released here in 1967. In fact in Cambridge MA it played FIVE consecutive years at the same theatre when college kids kept coming to see it again and again. I haven't seen this for quite a few years--I was too young to discover the movie in the 1960s and I saw it at a repetory house quite a bit in the 1980s. I loved it but I'm afraid to see it--I heard it doesn't age well.

That's not true. It's still realy fresh. I have seen many, many times.

It's not like it was particularly 'contemporary' in 1966. Give it a go.

I just watched it tonight for the first time since I saw it in college in the late 70's. It was wonderful and really held up well over the years! See it, you'll be glad you did.

Another movie that I remember seeing at about the same time that I also enjoyed tremendously is "Being There" with Peter Sellers. It came out about 12 years after this one, but it is another movie I remember seeing in school and one that I think holds up very, very well. Well enough that I bought it, and I may buy KOH as well!

The more things change in the world, the more they stay the same. So I think both of these movies are a great relief from current events, so to speak.....
