Why didn't they kill him when Oktober told them to?

He was all drugged up, they were ordered to kill him, and next thing you know he's aking up by the river. What am I missing?

The killing was a ruse.

IMHO, the following is the plot:

Quiller wakes up in the river, thinking the 'baddies' had botched the job i.e. thrown him in the river to drown but he survived. He immediately gets a taxi to go to safety.

He is actually falling into a trap set by his foes. They are waiting for his return to consciousness and hope that he would head straight to his headquarters, the location of which he has not revealed.

The taxi driver may also be a 'baddy' plant and when he stops and gets out of the taxi (not sure of the reason), Quiller sees that they are being followed by 'baddies' and steals the taxi to get away.

They weren't just being followed by Oktober's men; Quiller saw that the cab driver stopped and went over to talk directly TO Oktober's men.

That's brilliant, I never thought of that. The first time I saw this film I was a bit disappointed. I thought: "So... this is it? Some old member told Quiller the location of the neo-Nazis. Quiller escapes because they fail to kill him yet again. Quiller tells his superiors. We don't even get to see the arrest and that's it." But because of posts like yours I see there's much more to the story. Also, the first time I saw this film I didn't even get Inge may be a neo-Nazi as well.

I understood that the guy with the glasses who was supposed to make the lethal the injection did not do it (although his comrades assumed he did). Apparently he did not support the Nazis anymore. That's why he showed Quiller their house later. I may have it wrong, but that's how I got it during the movie.

You've got the characters mixed up. The drug-injector and the house-revealer (who was the swimming pool manager) were two different people.

reply

Yes. That was very odd and definitely a plot mistake. Probably more credible if they tried to kill him by drowning him and he somehow managed to escape.

reply

Quiller wasn't killed by the Nazis because they still needed him to find out the location of the people who assigned him on the case.

I've been chasing grace/ But grace ain't easy to find
