I admit this is a dumb question

Love the Movie - Great Western - my question is admittedly pretty dumb - why in the heat of southwestern United States and then in Mexico is Burt Lancaster wearing long underwear; Lee Marvin a heavy cardegan sweater and all of them bulky jackets????????

reply

Yeah, but more great dialogue in any western this side of The Wild Bunch.

It may be that at night in the dessert, it can get pretty chilly. Wide temp swings.

First of all, all men wore that kind of underwear in the 19th and early 20th century. It was called a union suit and if you wanted to wear underwear, that's all there was. Secondly, if you go to the Southwest or northern Mexico in the winter months, you will be pretty miserable without a sweater and/or a heavy coat. It gets surprisingly cold!

As anyone who has been out West knows the desert gets pretty damn cold at night. Plus, it helps absorb the sweat from your body.

reply

Would you have running around buck beaming? The long Johns for decency sake and for that warm and fuzzy feeling. Yes the desert is cold at night.
