One of the Top Ten Zombie Films

Cinefantastique picked this as one of the Top Ten Zombie films, maybe more because it deals with traditional voodoo not the modern cannibal-type living dead. When you think of it, there haven't been that many "voodoo" type zombie movies. Read the list here: http://cinefantastiqueonline.com/2008/02/16/top-ten-zombie-films-plus- one-or-two

This is definitely one of the top ten zombie films and I think it is important to remember that it was released two years before 'Night Of The Living Dead' so it pre-dates the entire flesh-eating zombie genre. Prior to Gilling's film there had been nothing truly eerie in the zombie genre since 'I Walked With A Zombie' in the forties. Most Zombie flicks in the intervening years had either been cheap or played for laughs; this film, like most Hammer movies, was made on a small budget but looked fantastic - the sets, props and costumes all looked as if they came from a larger, more expensive movie. Even the special effects were efficient and scary for the time, particularly the doctor's dream sequence in the graveyard. If you see it for the first time now it may not seem so fantastic, but in context it is clearly a landmark zombie movie and it is easily Gilling's best movie. John Carson - an under-rated actor if ever there was one - also turns in a fantastic performance.

the list ain't bad but i can't believe Land of the Dead is on there and not Day of the Dead, which is my favorite of the series. Day was awesome, am I alone in thinking that?

Agreed, land is much worse, it is not even worthy of top 100 on that list being honest. Day is better, and the best in series. This was a good film, supriselly good!

Is There heavan and hell?It makes sense to say that we are living in hell now!

yeah land was ok until the zombies walked off in the end trying for a place to live that sucked. Day was awesome not as good as dawn but still excellent. I liked plague of the zombies but dont really consider it a zombie film although this was how zombies originally started with voodoo and a master i think of zombies as romeros zombies.

DAY is awesome, but LAND made the list because it specifically identifies the walking dead as "zombies." NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DAY OF THE DEAD do not.

PLAGUE is a more traditional zombie film, with its roots in voodoo. The idea behind the list was to stick closer to that kind of zombie as much as possible.

"Plague Of The Zombies" is my favorite voodoo-type zombie movie.

I really like how Hammer incorporated legends, folklore, and classic literature into their horror films. They were like the "Masterpiece Theater" of horror.

As for flesh eating zombie movies, I'd say my all-time favorite is the original "Dawn Of The Dead." "Shaun Of The Dead," and the original "Night Of The Living Dead" would also be high on my list.
