Breaking Down Bergman on Persona

Breaking Down Bergman is a webseries where myself, David Friend, and co-host Sonia Strimban explore Ingmar Bergman's career in detail.

We filmed a two part episode for Persona so that we could get into the intricacies of the film and discuss many of the hot topics that have attracted cinemaphiles over the years.

Hey David,

I've been working my way through some Bergman films and, since finding your series, have also enjoyed checking out your thoughts on the films. Good work; you guys do a great job at giving an informed review and also exploring the ideas that the films present.

Perhaps one of these years I'll watch all of Bergman's films chronologically (not a small undertaking, as you well know), but until then I'm trying to seek out those generally considered his best or, as you put it in your videos, "essential Bergman". Without watching all of your videos (which have possible spoilers for the films) do you think you could list which ones you and/or your co-host have deemed "essential"?

Can't wait to see your video on Fanny and Alexander!

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Hey, thanks for the comments. I'm glad you're enjoying the series.

Every decade we create a short list of what we think are the best films of the timeframe, and discuss some of the reasons why we feel that way.

I don't think any of these videos get into each film in enough detail that it would include spoilers, so you might what to check them out for a few ideas. They're on the main YouTube page under the header "Bergman By the Decade."

Hope that helps,

- David
