Is there a trilingual DVD version of this movie (with no dubbing at all) ?
If not, is it possible to make one myself by mixing the audio from the english, french and german dubbed versions ? I know it would be a lot of work but well after 40 years trying to see this movie the proper way I guess I could spend a few hours doing it myself ^^
The same question I've been asking myself since I bought the UK version of the DVD the day before yesterday. Sounds a bit silly all the French and Germans speaking English with each other, but with a French or German accent. So if anyone knows of one, I'd be very interested in a trilingual version as well, moreover, as I'm German and I understand all three languages.
By the way, which is the original version/dubbing of the film? The French version, or the English one?
Like in the Longest Day, every actor originally speaks his own language. So at least 2/3 of the movie is in French and the rest in English and German, meaning there is no dubbing at all. But unlike for the Longest Day we still don't have a proper DVD with this trilingual original version.
Technically there should be still 3 differents versions though:
- One with french subtitles when actors speak in english or german.
- One with english subtitles when actors speak in french or german.
- One with german subtitles when actors speak in english or french.
So 1 unique original audio track but 3 sets of subtitles. I guess they could also provide a subtitle-free version for people who understand all 3 languages.
Somehow I have the feeling that we'll have to wait for a very long time to get this, that's why I was thinking trying to make it myself. One of the catch is that to even try one must rip the DVD first, which is technically illegal, even if you own it.
The other catch is the region 1 DVD only has English 5.1 and French mono, not even German, so first we would need to find a german DVD (if it even exists). Even so, I doubt I'll find French and German in 5.1 so everything would have to be downgraded to Mono :(
Oh well, I don't have much spare time at present anyway, but one day...

Region coding might be the least of your problems. Remember that NTSC and PAL run at slightly different speeds.
FWIW, Amazon.de (the German sister site) currently lists only one available version, "Parigi brucia?", with sound in English, Italian & Spanish, and Italian subtitles.
Ok, so finally someone posted on Dailymotion what looks like a TVHD rip of the German version. So after 8 years since I posted that message, I now have the German audio track!!!
The scenes in German are clearly the original ones, I recognize Gert Frobe's voice and the audio clearly matches the video in those scenes.
Now recreating the original audio is going to be a lot of work:
- We would have to start from the Region 1 DVD because the NTSC fps is clearly closer to the original 24 fps than the PAL one, and both the English and French tracks are already in sync.
- For the German scenes we will have to resync them from the German track since it comes from PAL, and it also needs some remastering because it's a bit noisy. Also have to check if it was pitch corrected or not to process it properly.
- Then we will have to mix the 3 audio tracks smoothly, that's clearly the hardest part and I have not done audio mixing in several years.
- Finally, we will need to recreate all the subtitles and burn a clean DVD.
That's a huge task and I don't know when I will find the time to work on it, but since we have waited 50 years already and nobody seems to do anything about it, I guess there is no rush...
If people want to help just let me know: I'm sure there are many people around here more qualified that I am to do audio editing, but at least I can be of great help to identify which scenes should be in which language.

share@rocket richard: I beg to differ, having to hear Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo dubbed in english or Orson Wells and Kirk Douglas dubbed in french is a crime! Besides, that breaks a lot of the mood of the movie...
