Clearly 15 years ahead of it's time.

"Closely Watched Trains" pre-dated "Porky's" in it's sexual frankness. This maybe one of the first films that comically depicts a teen wanting to loose his virginity, but unlike "American Pie" it's actually funny and Intelligently written. I was surprised at it's content for such a classic film. A masterpiece to Czech out!

Are you complimenting it by comparing it to Porky's and American Pie? You're right that we couldn't have seen that sexual frankness in the US in 1961. The censors still had some control then.

You've got me wondering how Czech audiences viewed it back in 1961. Did they think it was intelligently written, or did they think it was funny trash, just as Americans viewed Porky's?

reply

I'm complimenting it because not only is it a great film but because it was groundbreaking. "Porky's" and "American Pie" are average films so it was probably bad to compare a 4 star film like "Closely Watched Trains" to them. But I wonder if this film had an influence on them as far as taboo subject matter was concerned?

Hrma was a tragi-comic character. His desperation to lose his virginity combined with his suffering from premature ejaculation made me feel very sorry for him.
