'motivation' for Cliff's death (?)

Yes, I realize this may be a hilarious question, given the nature of the film, but ... can anyone who may have seen this un-MST'd tell me whether there is any ghost of a motivation for Griffin and Landis to suddenly throw Cliff Weismeyer down a well/mineshaft/whatever?

In the MST3K version, they just, well, grab 'n' go.

I think it was because they wanted to steal the guy's car and wanted no witnesses or somebody to call the cops....but if you are looking for 'sense' in this movie, that's like looking for sense in a fever dream.
I am watching it now ala MST and it is still like looking at a train wreck....yeeeeesh!
