Riverboat and other powered equipment

I just watched this movie on TCM and of course, enjoyed it again. but, I happend to notice that the river boat that delivered Max to the swamp prison was a powered boat with emissions( blue). I also noticed that there was some other kind of powered equipment they were using in clearing the swampland. Anybody have any ideas on this. Seems odd for the timeframe.

I noticed it as well. I can't find a date for when "Nevada Smith" takes place, but apparently the first gasoline powered engine was used in 1895. So "Nevada Smith" could take place anytime after.

I noticed that it sounded like a gas engine and not a steamer. I read in the Goofs that there was a welded steel barge used although the movie was supposed to be set in about 1880.

I think you folks are looking too hard.. No ... No gas engines back then but thry did have steam powered engines for work and boats... They are just hoping you will watch the story and not worry about the color of the smoke.....its a frikkin movie not a documentary.

I don’t mean to start an argument but, this is a movie chat forum where, people you know.... want to chat about the movie. When people write posts to talk about what they perceive as anomalies or “plot holes” there’s inevitably a response suggesting they’re nitpickers and telling them to just enjoy the movie. This same response could apply to any post. But, why discourage people from doing exactly what this board was created for?
