man, you can feel that whip

maybe it's Art Kennedy's acting (re-acting) combined with excellent sound effect....I've never felt such vicarious pain from a scene in a movie

Henry Hathaway was a great director....knew how to build INTENSITY

I know! It looked painful.

When properly applied, the whip's tip is traveling faster than sound. You damn bet'cha it hurts!!!

I thought that whippin' looked really fake; I'm still lookin' for a good whippin' -- Zorro cracked a good one, though.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

I agree - I felt it too! Powerful scene - reminded me of that scene in Glory w/ Denzel Washington, (who took the whipping much better than the guy in this film), but both scenes are strong.

I thought the same thing about the whipping scene -- very well done.

His acting was good, acting in pain like that, but the way Pat Hingle so daintily whipped was just awful. It was like he was trying to tickle the guy. The whip wasn't even hitting him with its tip, it was just lightly wrapping around him. Awful. Pat looked like he was trying not to hurt the guy.

For truly "vicarious" and painful-looking whipping, watch The Passion of the Christ. That was a rough one, that whipping scene.

There was actually no pain whatsoever during the filming. It's the acting and sound effects that make it appear to be painful. In a real whipping, it would look a little different than in this movie. I think anyone who would actually whip someone like this should be pushed off a building.

I was literally cringing during the whipping scene. It was super intense.

It gave me a tingle in my pants.
