Seems he slimmed down through exercise which was a more more healthy way to go about it than Bale.

He played a normal guy who was only on the run in the wilderness, with limited food, for a few days. There was no reason for him to appear emaciated. However, he was in very good condition. I remember seeing him in a talk show interview, promoting the movie, and he said he was running ten miles a day.
