Early on he pierces a high cactus branch with his spear and sap drips from the wound. He neither uses its sap as a poison, nor does he use the dripping sap to any effect. I remember a scene where someone uses sap dripping on their enemies to produce intense itching. Was it The Gods Must Be Crazy? Anyway, they obviously focus on the cactus sap on his spear and dripping. What was the point of that?

I believe he was trying to mark it so as to lead his pursuers off his track.
EDIT: actually, thinking about it again, he may have done it to purposely lead he/them into a trap.
