J.K Rowlings and The Munsters

This may have been asked before but when writing Harry Potter---Was J.K Rowlings influenced by some of the character names from Munster Go Home? Ex: Crookshanks? (I know it's mis spelled) Hermione? The Griffin?

reply

I rather doubt it.

We can eliminate Hermione right away, since Rowling said she got that name from Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale.

Cruikshank/Crookshank is a surname. Rowling has said that she "collects" odd sounding names for use, so she could have picked this one up anywhere.

As for the Griffin, it's doubtful that she picked this up from any one source since it's commonly seen throughout Western culture from ancient times to the present.

Also, the name Crookshanks means 'crooked leg', and if I remember correctly (it's been a long time since reading the first books), the cat wasn't a very pretty cat.
