Underrated By Munster Fans

MUNSTER GO HOME is not as good as the best MUNSTER episodes but it's a very entertaining movie and I don't think most fans of the show give it enough attention. It has a lot going for it, almost the full cast of the show, written by the main writers of the series and directed by someone who helmed several episodes, a chance at last to see the Munsters in color, excellent cinematography, several good gags (some of them a little too racy for a tv show at the time), excellent guest stars in Terry-Thomas and Hermonie Gingold, and fairly good script. The only thing that really doesn't work is boring Marilyn romance subplot, Debbie Watson as Marilyn (just too different from Pat Priest and Beverly Owen, for that matter) and Robert Pine as her British boyfriend (very bad accent too, couldn't they have found a British actor?) and the "climax" that doesn't seem credible although the actual final scene is fun. I wonder if even Pat Priest could have made that dull storyline work.

It's a good movie. Much better than Munsters Revenge.

Well, THATS not saying much-but ''Munster, Go Home'' actually seems to have improved with age.Even 100 years from now, ''The Munster's Revenge'' will probably still be damn near unwatchable.

Plus lots of focus on the bitchin CARS. The creation of the Drag-U-La!

I wish there were more scenes in the Munster house. I love their house but we only get about 5 minutes of it prior to their trip. They should have cut the dumb, elongated drag race at the end.

"I told you a million times not to talk to me when I'm doing my lashes"!

reply

Completely agree with you, we need more "at home" footage given this is our only chance to see the original set decorations in color. The drag race was dumb but I guess 1960's kids might have found it funny and the movie was clearly aimed at them.

I love Debbie Watson deeply. I love her subplot as Marilyn here. It was well done and surprisingly a deep characterization on her part (I am not sure if another actress would have come off deep at all__I think it is Watson's own talent making the depth) and one really feels for her destroyed inner feelings at the relationship breaking.
