What a godawful, phony movie

It really tells you something of the times when this horrible mess about a psychopath is perceived as a "comedy," and a highly praised one at that. (Watch the trailer and you'll see the glowing American reviews from the New York Times and the defunct New York Herald Tribune, the paper of record for the WASP-GOP Establihsment.

Pauline Kael -- the greatest movie critic of her time -- hated this film, and I can understand why. It's as phony as a three-pound note.

This is a movie by macho fools who think that rape is just another legitimate means of seduction. This is a drama about two pathetic people played for laughs, with the same ridiculous, Richard Lester "effects" such as speeding up the camera that seemed so hip with the English new wave cinema, which Charlie Chaplin rightly denounced as bogus and old-fashioned as high button shoes.

I agree. But it must be understood in its context. It was probably very daring for the 1960s, that a paranoid schizophrenic/psycho was the "good guy." Rubbish, of course, but....
