'abas la republique des lâches'

Paul writes this on the door of the bathroom, where two gay man are kissing. So I didn't know what "lâches" meant, so I looked it up, and apparently, someone invokes it when an opposing party sleeps on its rights, being no longer entitled to claim anything. So, is Godard saying that the gay community hasn't fought enough for equal rights, or something like that?

maybe. or maybe hes saying that they should. good observation. i saw it as way more literal, like come out, dont be a coward. how are things going to change if people hide instead of defending their rights? so yeah i guess. i mean it was the 60s.

They were hiding their kissing behind a door, and in so doing, besides being (to Leaud's character) cowardly, were also depriving him of using the bathroom for its intended use - he probably had to leave an awful dump, and now would have to find somewhere else. Their cowardice was affecting HIS life negatively.
