Football game

Was that game played at Rice stadium? Is that the University of Houston in blue? It's been a few years since I've seen this movie but always wondered that. I liked this movie in a campy kind of way.

I just got the dvd and the image is pretty sharp. That is a game between the SMU Mustangs and the Baylor Bears at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The SMU red looks more orange, but I think that is from the age of the film. In one shot you can see a banner on the upper deck of seats that says "Mustangs". Also, in some shots you can see the roof of a large building behind the Cotton Bowl that was used for indoor rodeos and ice hockey before Reunion arena was built.

This movie was filmed in Dallas (my home town). I don't know why it is set in Houston, since the city isn't important (maybe except for the few references to NASA). There are many Dallas landmarks from the 60s, including the the downtown skyline, Cotton Bowl, Love Field, the White Rock Lake spillway and The Athens Strip on Lower Greenville Ave. I used to live about 3 blocks away from there in the mid-70s.

Some really funny Texas history in this movie, like the ban on liquor by the drink in bars. Also a clever tactic by the Martians to steal a car from the airport's long term parking after seeing the driver head to the terminal with a suitcase. Clearly this car wouldn't be missed for at least a few days.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just put this movie in my blockbuster que and I'll check it out again. I'll be looking more closely for the Dallas landmarks. For some reason I just took it at face value that the movie was happening in Houston.

I think the one building you are referring to is the FairPark coliseum. Is that building even standing anymore? I saw Stryper play there in 1989. The Dallas Blackhawks of the old Central Hockey League played there. I was a big Fort Worth Texan fan. I thought Dallas was a whole universe away, in some ways it still is.

I enjoy watching movies/TV filmed locally. I get a kick out of the old Walker Texas ranger reruns.

If you look at the map that the authorities (I don't recall if it's the FBI or NASA) are using near the end of the movie, it is clearly labeled as a map of Dallas. They have a closeup of it for at least 2-3 seconds. Also, the final showdown is right outside the old White Rock Lake fish hatchery.

Enter "White Rock Rd & Shore Fish Hatchery Dallas, TX 75214" into Google Maps and look at the "Street View" photograph. It is in the exact spot the movie camera was filming from.

The martians called this building an ice factory because it explains the availability for the chemicals they need to put the women in suspended animation for the trip back to mars.

And of course, there are several very long filler shots of the distinctive 1960's downtown Dallas skyline.

Yes, the Fair Park Coliseum still stands, but it's used mostly for livestock shows now.
