Drama / Horror / Mystery / Thriller

errr...how about Drama / Musical?

I suppose Drama fits the actual film itself best. The play within the movie plays out like a mystery/passion play with musical numbers. But the overall feel of the thing is very horror somehow, maybe just the way it's shot and presented. If Peter Cushing had appeared in it as Dr. Frankenstein, it somehow wouldn't have been totally out of place. I saw someone call it Cinema Grotesque once. I don't know if I'd go that far, but it wasn't appetizing.

It is not a horror. The horror, as genre, is something different from what you percept as horror in Marat/Sade.
