I've always been struck with how Marat/Sade fits in with the mileu of late sixties films expressing a similar kind of philosophical misanthropy such as Godard's Weekend and even Lindsay Anderson's If...

More recently, Jan Svankmajer's Lunacy bears more than a hint of Marat/Sade, even containing a subplot with de Sade preparing a tableau vivant in homage to Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People" with the inmates of Charenton Asylum.

I know of Marat/Sade's roots in Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty and Brecht's Epic Theatre, but my knowledge of drama is fairly limited compared to my knowledge of film. I was wondering if anyone knew of other plays thematically or stylistically similar.

"WAITING FOR GODOT." Certainly not styalistically

My suggestion is Danton. It is the story of Georges Danton, a Jacobin associate of Marat and Robespierre. He was executed in April 1794, nine months after Marat's assassination, largely because Robespierre had come to think Danton too lenient toward more moderate voices. Indeed his tone was a little more moderate than Marat's (which is not saying much).

Ken Russell's "The Devils" (1971) was clearly influenced by the look and acting styles of Marat/Sade. It's an excellent and frequently misunderstood film in its own right.
