There was very much a war. Practically a world war when you consider Europe was the enlightened world at the time.
The King of England was at war with the Prince of Rome, along with Martin Luther and any other country that split from the Holy Sea.
What we take for granted today would cause a world war at this time.
Henry VIII was even considering throwing his faith behind Islam for support.
