I thought this was going to be released...

I remember seeing in the Amazon.com website that this Flintstone movie was to be released early this year. I now see that the studio doesn't plan on releasing it. Does anyone know what's going on with this?

reply

It *was* released, it was available, I saw it in stores, but now it's gone. Or almost gone - - as of this writing there's still a few places online where you can find it.

I'm guessing it's sudden disappearance is due to some silly rights wars. The TV series is now officially Warner Bros product. Maybe they've bought it out? Maybe planning their own release of it following the series box sets? Who knows? Not me...

Maybe someone who actually knows something should fill us all in.

You're right in a sense. I saw this for rent at a local Blockbuster Video Store.
It was badly damaged, especially for a DVD that just came out after years of being missing in action. The only place that has this is probably with either Amazon and Movies Unlimited if they had additional items in stock. The TV series like you said is now officially a product of Warner Bors. since the company(along with Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner)have the entire collection of every classic cartoon ever made from the studios of Hanna-Barbera. They also own the rights to not only The Flintstones, but The Jetsons,Jonny Quest and Scooby Doo too. In other words, the entire library from the studios of Hanna-Barbera. They even own the rights to the Tom and Jerry franchise(which was also produced for MGM by Hanna-Barbera).

Getting back to the movie "The Man Called Flintstone",the producers decided to end the series and the show by giving the characters from Bedrock there own full length feature animated cartoon, released in 1966 by Hanna-Barbera Productions and Columbia Pictures. This time around its only the characters of Fred Flintstone(Alan Reed),Barney Rubble(Mel Blanc),Wilma Flintstone(Jean Vanderpyl),and Betty Rubble(Gerry Johnson who basically replaced Bea Benederet in the television series and here in the theatrical version as well),leaving the family pet Dino, the infants Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm,and the infertile character that killed the show,KAZOO!!!......Fred is mistaken for a international espionage agent while on vacation with his wife and next door neighbors in Europe(Eurorock). Catchy!

Pebbles and Bamm Bamm were in the movie.

Dec. 2, 2008 "A classic is finally released."

WB is "finally" releasing "The Man Called Flinstone" and for the first time on DVD, Yogi Bear's first movie, "Hey There It's Yogi Bear".

Do be advised that both DVD issued versions of these animated films have had BOTH opening sequences altered. It was the only way around the issues of copyright ownership...

reply

Is the alteration going to be the missing Columbia movie logo, the lady with the torch, which i'm certain at the opening of this movie was Wilma holding the torch.I have the Canadian release and this isn't on it,it has the Warner logo instead, apart from that everything else is the same.

reply

Yes- exactly what you've described has (already) been altered/edited...
