So pretentious it was laughable. The Mel Torme song has to be seen to be believed.

Looks like Leo Penn or his editor watched a lot of French New Wave flicks. But I did enjoy much of the music. But some scenes were unintentionally funny, along with a strange mix of Rat Pack and "Golden Boy" alumni. Where was Billy Daniels?
shareI just saw this movie again for the first time in years. If you call this the worst film ever made you must not have seen too many movies. The music alone puts if above most of the crap that is passing form movies these days. And Mel Torme, he was great. The guy was a well respected Jazz singer I use to hang out in clubs and parties with musicians ll of the time and saw scenes like that all of the time. Of course not dubbed.
Sammy Davis Jr wasn't bad at all. But that crawling scene was way over done. You talk about the Mel Torme scene. You seem not have any knowledge of that scene. But I have seen a lot of tormented musicians who drink and take drugs. I like the Cicily Tyson character because she was not some prude but a grown woman who IMO is attracted to men like Adam because that is the environment she grew up with her grandfather. I like the backdrop of the clubs, some I have been to. It wasn't a great movie but far from being the worst.
Every movie on imdb.com has a discussion thread entitled "The worst movie ever made," or variations on that.

You are so right! Although this was not a perfect film by far....it certainly was not the worse ever made. I enjoyed every debatable minute of it! I am old enough to remember this era, when jazz was struggling to survive as a popular music genre. To see all of the celebrated personalities, musicians, etc was an added delight. I saw a young Morgan Freeman in one of the background scenes, and what a treat to see Frank Sinatra, Jr. doing his own thing!

Not perfect but fascinating, maybe the best movie about a jazz musician. Davis was spectacular, and should have been nominated for best actor.
