1966? 1968?

This film is dated 1966 and was supposedly filmed in the summer of that year (except for the ending which was filmed a little later), but I was confused about the reference to "Chicago" which seemed to be about the convention/riot in '68, and also the character Richard Nixon. Why wouldn't he have used the characters Johnson/McNamara instead of Nixon/McNamara in '66? I believe there were some other references to '67 and '68 in the film as well. Is it Godardian clairvoyant science-fiction?

"SEDAGIVE?"

reply

Yes, by and large I think it is just clairvoyant. 1968 was an election year in France, too, so he was projecting forward to that. I don't remember the Chicago reference, though. Where does it occur in the film?

reply

I don't recall any reference to Chicago. But Richard Nixon was a well-known political figure by then, a noted reactionary and warmonger and it wasn't hard to predict him winning the US presidency. As for anything else, well, the 1960s was a turbulent time; any vague prediction of upheaval stood a pretty good chance of turning out accurate.
