In the past 30 days I have had the opportunity to watch the following movies:

* Jump into Hell http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048235/
* The Battle of Algiers http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058946/
* Lost Command http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060637/

Other people have commented how "The Battle of Algiers" (TBOA) had overshadowed "Lost Command" (LC) as both were released in 1966. The Battle of Algiers, a black and white film, is more of a documentary film where LC really seems to be more of a general entertainment film.

Jump into Hell (JIH) is also a general entertainment film, a US production released in 1955. I think that the director of LC, Mark Robson, may have used (JIH) for ideas on how to portray the battle of Dien Bien Phu. The feel of the battle in LC seemed to be very similar to JIH.

Intimate Enemies has been made recently. This follows the war of the conscript infantry and their Algerian auxiliaries. By all accoutns the French have had a "don't mention the war" attitude to this conflict, and Intimate Enemies helps to blow this attitude away.

A couple of years ago a movie called Outside the Law followed three brothers who come to Paris from Algeria. They raise emoney to buy weapons and launch attacks in France with bomb attacks and killings of the police and moderate Algerians.

In 1961 Fremch Police struck back in Paris. During a big FLN demonstration they were ordered to attack. They beat a lot of demonstrators and threw them into the Seine River. Many bodies floated down river for several days. Others were rounded up and taken to the police courtyard. The police removed their ID and beat the Algerians to death. It has been called a massacre.

There are wild estimates but probably 400 or so died.
