Good but nowhere near on the same level as 'A Touch Of Zen'

The film had some good moments such as when he catches the throwing knife with his chopsticks and the final fight scene, but unfortunately everything else in between is quite frankly not particularly great with its rather poor and uninvolving script and fight scenes which seemed to be a bit held back and not especially exciting, if i'm honest.

I really wish I hadn't watched A Touch of Zen first as this film is remarkably second-tier in comparison. It's still good in its own right though and the 4K transfer on the Masters of Cinema/Eureka Blu-Ray is absolutely stunning....much like the recently released A Touch of Zen which has had the same loving treatment.

Good to own at the end of the day.

I have not seen Touch of Zen, but I quite liked Dragon Gate Inn. Kung Fu movies are not really my thing, so I didn't care much about the knife throwing or sword fighting. But the tense atmosphere of some scenes was well done - not the fight scenes, but the scenes between fights. And some characters were also pretty interesting, especially the major bad guys.

I highly recommend A Touch of Zen!

Both are good, but I actually like DRAGON INN a lot more than TOUCH OF ZEN. The way it builds, slowly and carefully, bringing in the key characters one at a time, giving them plenty of business to establish their characters, before bringing in the next one, adding to the suspense. The thrill is in watching the way alliances form and the way characters, even enemies, interact with each other, portraying themselves as one thing while the opponent knows who they really are, all culminating in a spectacular outdoors finale. I saw it at a Lincoln Center theater last month and I was hooked the whole time. I can't wait for this to come out on disc in the U.S.
