OT: How many?

How many trick-or-treaters came to YOUR door on Hallowe'en?

We moved into a new subdivision back in the early 90s, and there were a lot of young families like ours. Back then we had a couple of dozen kids or more.

In the last couple of years, it's been two or three kids between one or two families now that most families are grown. Now there's the occasional grandchild or new family that moved in the neighborhood. But you know what? I'll keep my light on and hand out a fistful of sugar laden treats to any kids that come to my door. It's been over 50 years, but we used to love Halloween as kids. As long as kids want to participate, I'll do so as well as long as I'm able.

We got a big bag of 200 pieces. They cleaned us out. I'm pretty sure some took more than a few pieces.

Reminds me of when my wife and I used to take our kids over to my brother's house and the girls take our kids trick or treating and my brother and I would watch TV (sometimes the world series was on). Because of my insistence that we give out candy at our house, I used to put a big bucket of candy along with with a creepy hand made headstone that told the kids they could take three pieces of candy each or be forever cursed if they took more (or something along those lines). Worked well for three years; we'd return home to find well less than half the candy gone. One year we came home and found the candy cleaned out. My kids fingered the family they believe was the culprit, and that was the end of the free candy. A couple of years later my kids were too old to go out so we stayed home and handed out candy directly which we still do.

Nothing like being reminded of our mortal lives to make the taste of candy that much sweeter and more savory. While I don't have any stories like that myself, living in an isolated wooded area, my family did host quite a Halloween party for all my then young school-aged friends and I many moons ago. It was as if reality had a sense of humor that day.

I was dressed as Elwood Blues from The Blues Brothers and boy, did I dodge getting hurt on several occasions; walking away from a display wall just in time before it would have collapsed on me, stepping on an exposed nail without puncturing any skin on the bottom of my foot, and barely missing being struck with a plastic arrow I myself had launched at an archery range. Still had a wonderful time and the party was a great success but cannot help but wonder if my choice of character was aiming to be as authentic as possible, surviving one unfortunate incident after another.

I had to share this after smiling warmly after reading your fun Halloween story.
