THIS MOVIE ROCKS

I saw this movie the first time when I was like 7 years old (I'm 35 now) and had nightmares about my whole life....(I am a HUGE HORROR FAN)
I got in on Video about 5 years ago and watch it at least once a week...you know how when we see a movie when we are kids and then see it again when we are adults the whole thing just looses something?...well to me this movie didn;t lose anything......to some this movie may be "cheesy" but damn it is also creppy...this is one movie that needs to be remade....with the FX we have today...this movie would really kick @$$.

I'm 43.... saw this movie when I was a kid too.
It's the first movie that really SCARED me. I remember having to leave my light on all night. I watched it a few more times, throughout my teenage years, but I was just thinking about it the other day... wondering if it would still be "Lights on all night" scary.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space was just on one of my premium channels... and they've been playing Vincent Price black and white movies.... I'll have to check into who to write to or e mail to suggest they put on ISLAND OF TERROR.

Thank you for your post !
I like all movies, but do favor the horror genre.

Hi Dina!
Hell yes, kindered spirits! I loved this movie also when I was a kid & saw it on tv one Saturday afternoon! It just took me over 25+ years to remember it (kinda) and to have the Net-knowhow to search for it by plot line! Now I found it! It wasn't The Blob '58 w/ Steve McQueen, this one was different, but did NOT remember Peter Cushing or that it was a Hammer film!
I guess the scene I remember most is the body with no bones inside and then the guy looks up into a tree w/ a flashlight & it falls & lands on him! Aarrgghh! I know I never saw if from start to finish but it did affect me too. Glad to see others liked it as much as I did! Gotta get this on video or dvd!

I first saw this film on tv when I was a young kid and it scared the hell out of me. I have seen it a couple of times since, but not for God knows how many years and missed out (somehow) when it was on video. Not remembering to look for it? Now I can only vaguely remember it.
I will get it when it comes out on dvd on January 17.

Me too !! I wonder if they DID remake this movie, if they could even come close to the frightening effect of the original ??
I'd surely go see a new version.

This movie made a huge impact on me as a kid. I had many sleepless nights wondering if one of those creatures was lurking under my bed. I would draw countless pictures of the "silicates." I used to watch other horror movies, but this one scared me like no other. Like another poster said, if they re-made this film with modern spfx, it would be great. But they would have to keep the design of the creatures close to the original. And keep the story of people trapped on the island with them. To me this movie works because it has a lot of good elements, from the creature's creepy odd form, to the isolation, and atmosphere of the island itself.

Was it just me, or do these creatures bear a resemblance to the Martian war machines from the 1953 War of the Worlds? (Another high impact movie on me as a kid.) To me, the dome shaped body and snake-like head seemed strikingly similar.

Same - saw it when I was 8 or 9 on Saturday afternoon tv.

Some sleepless nights ensued.

Would like to see it again, no similar picture made such an impression on me, except maybe one where this guy splits the world with a bomb...

reply

Yea man, isn't it funny how these older films affected us as kids?!
There was another one, not quite as good as Island of Terror, called Sound of Horror. Similar name, but very different....both are out on DVD now, which is cool. Check 'em out!

I would like to see this movie again. I remember it was very creepy. Didn't those things drop in from a church ceiling or something? And did they make weird noises?

Must have been about 5 when I saw it on tv. Scared me good.

reply

Yea, it's a b & w memory for me....I need to get this SOON so I can re-live what I can't recall now! I am sure they fall out of trees onto people and eat them and ceilings, I read here, also! But it's a real buried memory, I can't recall much of it....only buying the DVD can rectify the situation!

I still have not been able to see this movie again.
I have seen several good scary movies lately... horror seems to be the genre' of choice these days.
Still waiting for this one to come on one of the classic movie channels or for someone to remake it.
I'd definately go see a remake, but would be very nervous. If they messed up the storyline too much..... It would really spoil it for me.

Not a remake, no! I would hate that....well, maybe not...but it is available on ebay or maybe oldies.com! Good hunting!

Just bought and watched the German Widescreen R2 DVD. The color is a little washed out, but this disc will do until a better R1 version is released. The movie moves along very fast, and is an absolute sci-fi classic!

reply

Hi Lucio,
Are you in Europe w/ the R1 kind of DVD's? I'm in the US and I still haven't found a copy of this - yet! I remember seeing it YEARS ago and would love to see it again someday! ;)

I had the same reaction that many of you had when I first saw it as a child. There was something about these monsters that was scarier than others. Their invulnerability, their mindlessness, and that eerie noise they emitted all made them especially creepy. However, I have my doubts about today's special effects improving the movie by much. They might be able to make the silicates a bit more realistic looking, but even by today's standards the originals look pretty awesome.

An excellent and little-known movie. I saw this at the drive-in as a second feature along with (I think) Curse Of The Fly, so I'm dating myself here. Great flick, and had the ever-luscious Carole Grey too! Too bad hollywood can't take horror seriously any more the way other countries do-which is why I personally do not want to see a remake-they'd screw it up with humor.

reply

I thought I was the only one...I saw this as a kid (7-8 yrs old) with my dad and it scared the crap out of me, especially the part where Peter Cushing gets his arm chopped !

I bought it on video about ten years ago, now I watch it once a month or so. I'd love a DVD but it would probably be bare-bones anyway. Truly an awesome 'brit-horror' gem from the sixties !

"She thinks she's a mystery to all/ but I know what's behind those eyes."

reply

Yeah, I saw it as a child. During the summer a kid could buy a $5 ticket and see 10 movies-one a week-for 10 weeks. This was one, and it was scary. I thought I remembered Cushing got his arm cut off after getting caught by one of the critters and the other guy chopped it off with an axe.

I agree with the earlier poster, that the design of the creature was similar to the "War of the Worlds" alien, but I thought it also reminded me of that episode of the original Star Trek t.v. show. The animal that tunneled through solid rock. It was made of silicone as well, I think, and it looked like a fat pizza with everything.

reply

Yeah buddy, this movie impacted my childhood as well. I was never able to eat chicken noodle soup after seeing the scene where they divide. Oddly enough I had recently bought a HDTV and one of the HDNET channels had it on. I have it on my DVR as we speak, and my 6 year old daughter absolutley loves it. She calls the silicates "Turtle Snakes" and they have been a topic of conversation around the house for a few months now.

What a fun movie this was. My brother and I would always hit the Sat matinees in our town; this is one we still talk about every couple of years. He just told me tonight that he found some sorta vidoe online, that he may order it...

Why can't the sci-fi channel put some of these lovable ol' cheesy flicks on?

reply

I wish I could say I grew up with this, but, alas, I was born in 1983 and grew up with stuff like Godzilla. I found out about Island of Terror only recently, a couple of years ago, by way of a review on the web. The idea of monsters that kill you by sucking out your skeleton immediately took hold and I realized I had to see the film. So I got hold of a VHS copy of it and watched it, and was not disappointed. Since then it's become one of my top five favorite horror movies, and one I champion to my friends and almost everyone I've shown it to has liked it (although my sister thought it kind of lost steam midway through with the full reveal of the Silicates). I've since gotten the Region 2 DVD and it's wonderful seeing Island of Terror in widescreen.

Really, the fact Island of Terror grabbed me like it did is unusual because normally I have to grow up with a film in order to adore it unconditionally, but in this case, I think I fell in love with it the minute I read that first review. It's definitely at the top of my list of movies that I think need to be released to Region 1 DVD, and fast!

I saw this movie years ago. Possibly in the late 60s on WKBW channel 7 in Buffalo NY on Friday night horror movie theatre. I remembered it ever since and saw it now and then. Saw it on Svengoolie recently. Then found it on You Tube and got it. I am atempting to write a sequel to it starting where the original left off with the accident in the lab in Japan. Haven't worked out the story yet though. I will give it a go anyway and see what happens.
