How could anyone be a successful forger?

Where are the real ones that a fake wouldn't be noticed right away?

They don't exist or have been replaced. These type of art fakes, however, are usually original works that are created in the style of the original artist and then claimed to have been a recently discovered and previously unknown work.

http://www.essentialvermeer.com/misc/van_meegeren.htmlNicole's father talks about Van Meegeren's forgeries of Vermeer, which was absolutely true. Click on the link and you can read all about how someone can be a successful forger.

Well if you have a work of art that was stolen it would be easy to replicate it and then sell it to someone desperate enough to own it. Unless that collector has an in with someone who can identify it's fake. When you're dealing with a piece of stolen art you have to keep everything incredibly secret

If a piece of work is stolen, a forger can create numerous copies and if he is good enough sell them all as originals to collectors that want to keep the purchase quiet. I believe when the Mona Lisa was missing there were copies made but the original was returned to Paris.
