Wacky 'ashram' site?

Does anyone know anything about the site of the mountain temple - the brotherhood of the sun or whatever it was? Just curious as it looked like an unfinished home of some sort...?

reply

It's the so-called Moonfire Temple in Malibu, built by an eccentric member of the family that owned Green Shield stamps. I don't know if it still exists but there's a section about it in the excellent 60's documentary 'Mondo Hollywood'.

Among other things the temple inspired the forthcoming EP 'Moonfire Madness' by members of UK psychedelic band Bear Driver.

I'm seeing in articles that it was built just for the movie.

Best I can tell, the property was owned by the Green Stamps guy, and I suppose he liked it so kept the place standing and let his hippie friends hang out there in the 60s and 70s.

Some recent pics of it here:

Man, it's so Far Out! I'd love to live there.

If you love James Cagney and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make it your signature!

James Hubbell (sp?) the architect could do a lot with that lot!

Google likes this location:

Everding Mtwy, Topanga Canyon, CA

you still have to go to the lower right end of the road, at the loop, zoom in,and
click on Satellite.

Thanks! Was the ridgetop gravel road they drive to the site filmed on Everdin Mtwy, or did they pick that up someplace else?
I also wonder where the intersection is where Julie Harris turns off the PCH in the Porsche.

Google "Moonfire Temple" you'll see it. I can't believe it's still there and intact! Amazing.
