Doesn't Shelley Winters look 'triffic' in this movie!

She looks gorgeous with her boobs falling out of that skintight, low-cut black and white silk dress she wears while Harper is getting her pissed in the bar before he takes her home and she passes out on the sofa. How Harper ever resisted having his wicked way with her I'll never know! Her character seemed to be absolutely gagging for it! She also looked pretty yummy in that animal print top and pencil skirt outfit she somehow sprayed over her Rubenesque curves in the scene when Harper brutally manhandles her into the broom closet at the end

Shelley was always a little self-deprecating.
"Then I got fat".
How many actresses would say that line?
R.I.P., Shelley

I thought she looked awful. But then, she was supposed to look like a washed-up movie star. Interesting that, except for Janet Leigh and Pamela Tiffin, the main women in the movie were pretty unattractive: Julie Harris playing a singer strung out on drugs and Lauren Bacall playing a rather obnoxious Mrs. Sampson. Give them credit for being willing to take on "unattractive" roles.

Well, I'd have given the lovely Fay one (several, in fact). Especially if she was wearing that black and white low cut silk number. It's the bow in the hair that really does it for me though

You gotta love Shelly's sense of security.
The first exposure I ever had to her "gosh, I'm fat" routine was when she was too out of shape to survive the underwater swim in Poseidon Adventure. I guess that wasnt the first time.

reply

Yes this was a good 5 years before Poseidon. I loved Shelley for not caring what she looked like, acting talent is what mattered to her and she was great in any movie she's in. These anorexic tarts today don't come anywhere near the charisma of Shelley.

I'm not much into "rubenesque," but yes, she has a soft vulnerability that's sexy. Also, she's "bad!"

I first discovered Shelley Winters when I was a kid & saw "Night of the Hunter." The scenes where Robert Mitchum is about to kill her for wanting sex, and when the boy sees her dead, underwater, her long blond hair swirling in the water - ultra-memorable.

As a kid, I pondered long & hard what must've happened to the pretty lady.

BTW, Robert Wagner's the one who says "She got fat." I don't think Faye ever says that in the movie, "dumplins!"

I think I've seen this movie more than any other.

Actually for a larger lady she looked terrific; not the most beautiful lady in the movie (that goes to China Lee IMO) but she looked wonderful.

You're right about China Lee (she looked really hot frugging away in the disco scene), but the original poster is right, Shelley looked pretty do-able in that black and white dress.

What a delightful "big-boned gal" Shelley was, and such confidence to take a self-effacing role like that. I'd love to take that woman out for a good steak – and oh yes, there will be dessert.

lol. Shelley is awesome. Apparantly, she gained weight on purpose for "The Diary of Anne Frank" and for "Poseidon", she also gained 35 pounds to play that part. Gotta love her!

No.....she did not look good in 1950 either.

reply

Ha! I'm watching for the 4th time on TCM. Her loud mouth drunk performance is pretty good. However, I'd rather be in a Janet Leigh and Pamela Tiffin sandwich
