retarded?

She's supposed to be mentally retarded? I didn't get that. Maybe she seemed a little immature for her age but I don't think she seemed mentally retarded.

Spoilers below!

Brydie wasn't mentally retarded; she was emotionally retarded. She had avoided growing up or being responsible in life and had identified with children rather than anyone her own age (which was 17). Despite a lapse here and there (with forgetting to give her hamsters water for example) there was no indication of mental retardation; she just had a lot to learn and had some serious issues to deal with.

The suggestion in the film was that once Roibin the Gypsy gently guided her through finally remembering and talking through the major traumatic event of her childhood Brydie began to accept her real age and begin the process of growing up. There is a scene near the end when the children come to find Brydie and Roibin near the woods, and when it's suggested that the village won't let her return if she goes back to see her mother's grave, she says something like, "They can't stop me. I'm seventeen." I think this was an important scene showing that she had put aside her childhood and was ready to be an adult.

It is a leap to think that anyone as damaged and backward as Brydie would be ready for a serious romantic relationship so quickly, but Roibin also seemed to be rather simple and was obviously totally willing to work with her through her issues.

I also noticed in the final scene of the film we see Brydie run to meet Roibin, and in the meadow we see the lone red Gypsy waggon that Roibin's grandmother had lived in and nursed Brydie in. All the other Gypsy waggons are gone. I wonder if this implies that the grandmother may have stayed back with Roibin? And if so, that would make even more sense that she would be there to help the rather simple couple get on their feet.

Just my two cents!

Your lobotomy scar question had to be a joke but just in case it wasn't (gulp!) the scar was from when she fell 10 years before when the boy died.

She seemed forgetful and a little immature, but not retarded. I thought kids were more innocent in the 60's anyways. Can't compare them to today's over stimulated kids.

Also, her mother was a drinker and from the dirty house coat, it didn't seem like she took care of herself, so how could the village expect Brydie to learn anything?
