Synopses All Wrong

One says she's mentally retarded, another says something happened when a friend was killed when she was a teen, another says she has a learning disability. What? She was involved somehow in an incident where where kids were playing with a loaded shot gun and the boy was killed. She has a scar on her forehead and has either brain damage or forgotten the memory due to trauma. The crazy father of the boy blames her. She's traumatized, not retarded.

You are correct, her problems stem from her trauma at a tender age. It always bothers me when reviews state that she has mental retardation. Brydie stopped developing in certain emotional and behavioral ways because she carries guilt and uncertainty about her role in the death of her little friend Julian, but she is otherwise an intelligent girl, capable of living a normal life once she deals with her emotional trauma.

I actually think the film was ahead of its time by showing how Roibin gently helps her to face what really happened. He knows instinctively that she needs to face and give voice to what she's kept hidden deep inside for so long so that she can move on. It's a very healthy message and a beautifully-told little story.
