I never understood why Diego and the others were worried about the police in France and why they took so many precautions. I find it hard to believe that democratic France was collaborating with fascist Spain in tailing, spying, capturing resistance members.

How could France do this when just a few decades ago its own resistance was fighting the Nazis?

whenever countries become allies with each other, it's often because both of their governments have something to gain, not because they share some kind of ideology. besides, more often than not, ideologies are simply facades to manipulate the people into being complacent with such allignments.
