May I point out, that's why the call it ACTING.
Most actors are not "age exact" in the roles they play.

Just in general, looking at the cast list, reminds me that Shirley Knight (one of the older actresses in the cast) was the most established at this point in their careers, and was offered her choice between the roles of Polly and Kay. But Joanna Pettet doesn't provides a very strong emotional center for the film...Kay in the book is more of a stuborn, beautiful bulldozer...blunt and determined. I think they needed not a "better" actress in this central role, but someone with more emotional weight. Someone just a bit grittier, who's more of a natural survivor (even though the character comes to a sad end).
