If you are looking for english version of La Grande Vadrouille, I have good news for you.
I just found it on ebay. It's a boxset containing 12 louis de funes' movies in french with english subtitles. Price US $149.99. Maybe not very cheap but worth it. I got it. Just log on to:

All we can hope is that the DVD version will be available soon
(In fact I’ve been waiting for it since I’ve got a DVD player)

"La grande vadrouille" will be sent on Danish TV2 this night at 1:00 (AM). This will of cause be with danish subtitles. I'm not sure, however, if this is the french or english language version. I will record it on my Sony RDR-HX900 anyway :-)

This version, it turned out, is not dubbed, this is a mixture of french, english and german. And sometime the french actors try to speak english or german or vise-versa. I suppose this could be considered the original version.

GOOD NEWS! I found the English version on VHS in Sweden. It has Swedish subtitles and is under the Swedish title "Den Stora Kalabaliken". It is sold by Ginza music ( website www.ginza.se )at a VERY low price! Ihave bought a copy myself and shall burn it into a DVD for my personal use.

reply

How is the english dubbing? Are the voice actors good at least?
Also, are the swedish subtitles obtrusive?

Indeed, $3 IS a very good price... ;)

For those who want to see it in French w/English subtitles, there is always these websites:
http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=dvdinfo&id=1800403787
http://turnerclassic.moviesunlimited.com/product.asp?sku=191554
or these ones ("only" $30):

http://comedy-film.mainseek.com/-20915-140550-1-Grande-vadrouille-La.html

A VHS copy with yellow english subtitles DOES exist... somewhere... hopefully cheaper than it is at THOSE links. ;)

Is it the dubbed or the subtitled version?

reply

Did you happen to buy two copies as 'd be interested to buy one from you?

reply

I got my copy at www.fnac.fr. It's a shame that I can't share it with my English speaking friends cause it's fully in French.

Is a german DVD available?

reply

I wish they just made one version: the original spoken in French and English. No other synchro version (specially not in German)! Made it a lot easier for all of us to enjoy the film the fullest as it was meant to be. And we could buy it in France.

reply

Can someone enlighten me here, please? I just saw the movie, but I don't know what kind of version I saw. Is the original entirely in French? The one I saw was a mix of English, French and German. It seemed strange that de funès and the other guy should have spoken so much english though, since both are French. Have I seen the english version och the orig?

reply

You're lucky, because you saw the original one.

Btw, why do you think they would make a mix of languages if they would dub a movie? I never saw that done before. In a dubbed English version I'm sure everyone would speak English.

I JUST found the VHS version with English subtitles at Movies Unlimited, although they told me it's on backorder and they're waiting for it to come in. Here's the link:

http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musite/product.asp?sku=871008++

Hope this is helpful to others, since the earlier links provided no longer offer the movie! My French husband and I adore it (and all things de Funes!), and I really wanted to share it with my family, too! Good luck!

I have recently bought a copy off the shelf in Perigoux, France; La G V is very popular there, filling the place in France that we have for Mary Poppins or the Sound of Music in the UK. It is readily available in France.

My email address is [email protected]. I am returning to France in two weeks for a while and would be happy to find a copy for you. It is possibly my favourite film of all time, made by the remarkable Terry-Thomas.

I see this an very old email so maybe you have found a copy by now

Does anyone know if the amazon.fr version has English subtitles? Sometimes they say: sometimes they don't.

reply

Just today I received the Édition simple and it has unfortunately no English subtitles (it has French subtitles though but only when English or German is spoken). Maybe the HD DVD (http://www.amazon.fr/grande-vadrouille-HD-DVD/dp/B000L42JPY/sr=1-4/qid=1170780163/ref=sr_1_4/171-5133839-6214613?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) will have English subtitles.
------------------------------
UPDATE: According to http://www.dvdrama.com/rw_fiche-7915-.php the HD-DVD also has no subtitles. Looks like the French want to keep this movie for themselves.

reply

Does the Criterion Collection have the license rights to this film?

reply

I suggested it to them this past summer. Never heard back.

.......
"Well, if it isn't my old friend Mr. McGreg, with a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg!"

reply

I am really upset. I have been searching for weeks in french stores for the film with english subtitles.
I don't agree with the above comment that the french want to keep it for themselves. I believe they never understood that a larger word existed around...
Really looking forward for the DVD with English and German subtitles to be available...

I believe they never understood that a larger word existed around...

I'm french and i just discovered your comment which I think is offensive.

fact is that the Oury/Louis De Funes movies were very popular (and still are) in France obviously AND in the countries where it was dubbed.
And apparently those movies were not popular in english-speaking nations because it was not dubbed (except in Australia, where it was dubbed, and it was a hit thanks to that).

but apparently there are VHS avalaible with english subtitles for "la grande vadrouille"
