Dead F1 drivers?

In the trivia section for Grand Prix on this site it says Frankenheimer used 32 pro drivers, nine of which were killed the next year, and 21 gone by 1980. Does anyone out there have a list of these guys and their fates?

reply

Well, here's what I could find;

Including Jimmy Clark (who is listed as 'uncredited' playing himself), I see only 30 drivers in the cast list.

Only two died within a year; Lorenzo Bandini (died 10 May 1967 - racing accident at Monaco) & Nino Farini (died 30 June 1966 - motor vehicle accident on way to French GP).

In addition, those who died prior to 1980 were; Jo Bonnier (11 June 1972 - racing accident at Le Mans), Graham Hill (29 November 1975 - private plane crash), Bruce McLaren (2 June 1970 - testing accident at Goodwood), Michael Parkes (28 August 1977 - non racing motor vehicle accident), Peter Revson (22 March 1974 - testing accident at Kyalami), Jochen Rindt (5 September 1970 - practice accident at Monza), Ludovico Scarfiotti (8 June 1968 - hillclimb practice accident in Bavaria), Jo Schlesser (7 July 1968 - racing accident at Rouen), Jo Siffert (24 October 1971 - racing accident at Brands Hatch), Mike Spece (7 May 1968 - testing accident at Indianapolis), Jimmy Clark (7 April 1968 - racing accident at Hockenheim).

From among the bad and worst; Jo Schlesser, had an horrible accident with fire.

I always thought the end of the movie with James Garner on the empty grid should have a crawl with the names of the passed drivers.

Lorenzo Bandini died in the 1967 F1 Monaco Grand Prix
Joakim Bonnier died in 1972 testing at Le Mans
Bruce McLaren died in 1970 testing at Goodwood
Michael Parkes died in 1977 in a Turin road accident
Peter Revson died in 1974 testing at Johannesburg
Jochen Rindt died in 1970 in paractice for the Italian GP at Monza
Ludovico Scarfiotti died in 1968 in a Hill Climb
Jo Siffert died in 1971 at Brands Hatch in the British GP
Mike Spence died in 1968 Indy practice
Graham Hill died in a plane crash 1977?

Later in 1995, Juan Manuel Fangio died in 1995, at age 84, of natural causes.

Richie Ginther died of a heart attact.

It might be easier to say which one's are still alive from the movie. Dan Gurney retired in 1970, Phil Hill retired in 1967, Chris Amon is retired in New Zealand, Jack Brabham retired to Australia in the early '70's and Bob Bondurant is retired and running his driving school in Arizona. Jackie Stewart retired in 1973 one race earlier than he had planned due to the death of his teammate at Watkins Glen.

Jack Brabham retired to Australia in the early '70's

And passed away 5-14-2014.

reply

Jack Brabham along with James Hunt is one of the few F1 champions to die of natural causes rather than an accident related one.

Its that man again!!
