How do movies like this get made?

Was the assumption that teenagers would all be making out at the drive-in instead of watching the movie so it didn't matter? And how did once-relatively well-know actors sign on for this?
I was only able to watch as long as I did because I realized that today's teenage dramas aren't so bad by comparison.
