Groovy film but...

This is one of my favorite swinging london films but what I don't understand is why did alan Bates's character have to leave?

He was too irresponsible!

Alan Bates' character said to Georgy that he felt almost suicidal (i.e. with the responsibilities of home & child).

His character was only slightly more responsible than the Meredith character who abandoned her baby after birth.

But Georgy here grows from late adolescent to adult, as she saves herself a slow grief by cutting it off with the charming loser Jos.

Hi moviegurl,

Its just an opinion but I felt Josh (Alan Bates) could not stay with Georgy because he did not want the kind of "involvement" Georgy wanted. I don't think he could see himself as a father or in a closed relationship.
I guess its the reason why I can relate to him. I run a mile when things start smelling of commitment, I know its not the way everyone thinks but its made me content.
Thanks for a great thread.
