I think she might be the least likable character I've ever seen in a movie. I've seen some pretty evil movie villains who still had some semblance of humanity in them.

I agree. Just watched the movie again last night and it made me sick the way Meredith didn't care at all about her baby. The scene in the hospital ward where it's crying and she won't even pick it up is heartbreaking.
shareI thought she was a terrible person in general, only thinking of herself, and the baby only made her uglier inside and out. I'm not sure what Georgy saw in her.
The men - well - obviously she was goood in bed and sometimes that's all that's needed ... short term.
I thought that Georgy was one of those people that always tried to see the best in a person, no matter how cold and nasty they were. I have known people like that myself. They are so good that they tend to attach their same good traits on other people. People like that generally get hurt.

shareIf this character lived in this day and age, the woman would have been diagnosed with post-natal depression following the birth of the baby...when it's just a simple case of Meredith being unable to really care about anything or anyone (which again is a symptom most likely of a bigger problem that she wasn't dealing with, I'm sure many psychiatrists and psychologists have sat and watched this movie and diagnosed the woman in detail just from her behavior on screen).
Georgy and she are complete opposites which is why they probably got along so well. Georgy wanted to be a little like Meredith, she idolised how beautiful and direct Meredith was...how she had the "ideal" life that Georgy wanted (she had Jos, she had the pregnancy, the beauty, the glamour, the talent, the job).
If Meredith wasn't such a horrible human being, Georgy wouldn't have become the woman she eventually became.

Meredith was not evil because she not maternal. And she never treated Georgy bad. Her temperament was bitchy, but she didn't commit a crime to make that horrible. At least she was honest about not being maternal
