Why does Georgy leave Jos??

I've seen this movie many times, but I can never quite understand why Georgy leaves Jos. Is it because she wants the baby more than Jos, and the only way she can have/get the baby is by marrying (thoe old rich guy) and having a secure situation?

She was crazy about Jos, so it always puzzles me that she leaves him, especially when he was the first to say "I love you."

reply

She did indeed love the baby more, and Jos was so cool about giving the baby up for adoption. Perhaps she saw that he really was a rather shallow person, no matter how funny and charming he seemed.

I think the reason is basically shown in the lyrics of the end title song, which states she was always a mother at heart. Did she love Jos as a lover? She didn't have much experience at that, so perhaps it was a foreign feeling to her. I think she related to Jos as a child (he was often childish, albeit wonderfully so.) In the end, she chose motherhood as her wished for state, not love, or a combination of it all.

I don't mean to denigrate motherhood in the slightest. Just in this case, I think Georgy compromised herself because she was capable of motherhood and more. Or at least I want to believe, because I loved the character so.

reply

She left him because she needed to do what was best for the baby. Jos comes home saying he quit his job and now he's free. Yeah, free to have no income to pay for living expenses. He was childish. He was cute and sweet, but that don't pay the rent.

Adam-This could be trouble.
Riley-We better make a fort.
Adam-I'll get some pillows.

Is it made explicit that Georgy leaves Jos, rather than Jos leaving Georgy?

It was obvious Jos wasn't cut out for commitment (either as a father or a husband), and I can easily imagine having simply packed his bags and left of his own accord when it got too much.

Georgy loved Jos, but he wasn't cut out to be a husband and father...and because of the day he came home without his job the welfare lady was going to take the baby away from her. Jos was a free spirit and charming because of that. But at least Georgy chose a man that loved her very very much and would probly be very happy caring for both her and the baby and her parents.

Georgy's choice to marry her employer, who had earlier asked her to become his mistress, was purely for security for her and the baby. Georgy's new husband looks rather unhappy as they drive away after the wedding ceremony and he realizes that all Georgy's attention and energy will be focused on the baby. I think the ending is tragic-comic for everyone.

Jos was not capable of being a father to the child, not at that point in his life at least. Georgy was more than capable of raising the child herself as a single mother. Georgy really grew beyond Jos in many ways. Jos was still something of a teenager, emotionally at least. A man in terms of years, but not ready for fatherhood.

Thank you for the enormeus spoiler on the title!!!!!!!!!

Why, did it ruin the rest of your life?

gemichus is right, it is a really lame thing to put a spoiler in the title. Of course, your response is equally lame. Good thing you're not a horse.

Like others have said, she loved the baby (and what the baby represented) more than Jos.

Jos did love Georgy in his own way, though. Having just rewatched it, the break up scene is really moving to watch as you can feel that Jos is trying to hold on to Georgy but he lacks the maturity to articulate what she means to him. Then when Georgy goes off on the boat leaving Jos dancing and running down the pier, he waves goodbye and then he slowly lowers his arms and the camera pulls away leaving him alone. I think we're supposed to read into that, that Jos did have more substance than what we gave him credit for.

SPOILERS

I think the last scene explains it all. Georgy loves Sara more than anyone. I think she would have stayed with Jos if Jos were more mature but Jos almost caused the both of them to lose Sara and Georgy could not have that!

It is difficult to determine if Georgy is really mature or very manipulative. She was young, could have her own children at some point when she met someone, so why was she latching onto Sara at all costs?

reply

I believe Georgy loved Sara with all her heart. She had cared for and mothered that baby for a number of months, and did consider Sara to be her child.

Georgy manipulative? Not at all. Just bright enough to realize a married life with James would provide all the love and security she and the child required.

I've always thought Georgy would very soon see the true difference between Jos (cute, charming, totally selfish), and James (mature, stable, selfless). And, know she made the wisest choice for life-long happiness.

Smart women crush on boys like Jos, but we find true love with men like James.

Georgy responds to James's advances when he first propositions her so I like to think she'll come to have deeper feelings for him, despite the rather downbeat scene in the post-wedding limo.
