This movie deceived me! [SPOILERS!]

The DVD cover art makes it seem like this movie is some kind of fancy free, fun romantic comedy with a tinge of drama, but any of you who've seen the movie know that it's more drama than anything else.

I was beginning not to like it, until the ending, when she finally did get with James Mason – I was so pleased by that, because I was rooting for him almost the whole time. So, right when I was about to love the movie, they get married, get in the car, and she doesn't even hug him! She just takes the baby, and that's it! That's it?! The whole time, I kept thinking "hug him! Hug him! Hug him!" But she didn't do it! Grrr! Not at all what I was hoping to see!

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Had I seen the dvd art cover before watching it I would of thought the same thing you did.

I ran across this movie a couple years back and saw it from the time Meredith is in the hospital. I recently saw the whole movie a couple a weeks ago so I knew what to expect at the end. After seeing it in its entirety I like the movie. I do feel a little sorry for James Mason character and Georgy.

Is that the come back and kick me whistle?

Interesting how people can have such very different reactions to movies! For me, James Mason's character came across as being creepy in the extreme. I mean, he's watched Georgy grow up from a baby, and now is perving on her. Plus, we know he's been unfaithful to his wife before. So, my impression of him was as a self-centred dirty old man.

yeah, but he had money and security--she was living in a slum

This movie deceived me as well. I was expecting a cute, romantic comedy. It reminded me of Alfie, another film that deceived me.

A bleak drama buried underneath an ocean of broad "humor" and annoyingly ridiculous antics by Redgrave/Bates, yes. Should have forgotten about all that horsing around and made it a straight drama.

I agree! By the end, I had started to hate everyone in the film. Charlotte's character was overly dramatic. We hot the point early on that she was a selfish b*tch; but the hospital scene where Gordy calls her a "cow", was over the top.
Would've been better as straight forward drama. It didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. Quite disappointing.

she didn't love him. Why hug him?

reply

Maybe Georgie decided to marry him for his money!
