Personally, I think this has to earn the title ‘Greatest Heist Film.’ I saw it this summer and was incredibly impressed. My first thought after laughing hysterically was “They're probably gonna remake this.” ...and, well, they are.

I love Gambit, but feel the original Italian Job is better. However, both have Michael Caine, so there you go. I disagree with Saucybetty, How to Steal a Million is a great film. You can't go wrong with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. Gambit has a better twist, but the chemistry is stronger between Hepburn and O'Toole.

shareGambit is a fun heist film, but not the greatest. How to Steal a Million is better for its inter-play between the characters. But Topkapi is the greatest heist film.
shareI prefer Topkapi myself. Then there was that British movie about two brothers who took the crown jewels only to return them. They believed that under English common law, theft is committed only when the perpetrator has the intention to permanently deprive the owner. I forget the title.
Follow up edit: The Jokers, a Michael Winner film with a fantastic line-up of stars, mostly British.

For me, The Anderson Tapes. Gambit was too glossy and slick. The whole premise of the heist was cartoony.
