I think this film is just funny as all get out and totally intact (which is rare for a movie musical) and it EVEN has Zero Mostel (the Original Star) as the head character! The rest of the cast, including a very young Michael Crawford, are just phenomenal!! And God Bless Buster Keaton for being in this! He never failed to crack me up!!
I was plopped down in front of an old RCA CED VideoDisc player in the early 80s and forced to watch this movie and have to say it is still one of my favorite movies. Nostalgia? Sentimentality? No... it's a great, rollicking, silly, and fun movie.
As a life long hater of musicals (not that my father didn't try to get me to like them), I have to say that this is also one of the only musicals I have ever genuinely liked. Sure, you can bag on the quality of the music all you want, but it's a comedy. No one is taking it seriously, so why should you?
And Emma's right about the cast... Zero Mostel is a genius and this is my favorite role of his, right up there with "the Producers" (and isn't it odd that Nathan Lane was in stage versions of both?) Add in Jack Gilford, Phil Silvers, and a few brief appearances by Buster Keaton and you've got a great show. If you haven't seen this movie, you realllly need to.
I don't know, I would say Mostel and Silvers do too much mugging and hamming it up. And four old bald guys singing and dancing with babes in the background. Dated, very dated.
