The reason why there were enuachs working in the house of Lycus (Im currently doing Pseudolous in an on stage version) is so the they could work on the girls without being attracted and distracted by the girls nakedness.

I don't think Hero asks what a virgin is. Marcus Lycus says that the girl he's likes is a virgin. Hero asks if it's good that she is.

Marcus Lycus: "Oh that one. She's a recent arrival from Greet. A virgin."
Sudolys: "A virgin!"
Hero: "Is that good?"

That is an island, belonging to Greece in classical times and again since late 19th century.

A eunuch is, to put it bluntly, a guy with no balls. What it actually is is a man who is castrated so he cannot ejaculate sperm. Eunuchs were used to guard vestal virgins, because they couldn't have sex with them so they'd no longer be virgins. I know this sounds nuts, but then so is our present world.

Even in the early twentieth century eunuchs were employed as court officials in countries like China. Remember the eunuchs being exiled from the Forbidden City in "The Last Emperor", carrying their severed testes in jewel boxes?

To this day senior bureaucrats are contemptuously referred to as eunuchs.

One of my favorite lines, which still brings oh a hearty laugh even though I've seen this film too many times to count since it's release, is when the paternity of everybody is being sorted out and Erronius (Buster Keaton), with a puzzled look on his face, turns to the camera to say "My daughter is an eunuch?"
