The Body In the River

Hello,
I feel like an idiot, but can someone please explain to me how the body found in the very beginning of the movie ties into the lives of the other characters?

I haven't quite figured that out myself. Toward the conclusion of the movie, when the medical examiner was performing the autopsy, I found myself wondering if the dead body story line was a 'flashback'. We never saw the body's face...was she the girl or the wife, who may have committed suicide after the events of that day? Both women had experienced some extreme emotions that could have driven them to such an end.

Perhaps the underlying story is that we are all fragile human beings. Our emotional state could lead us to do something as drastic as suicide. Having said that, both the wife and girl were struggling with very controlling and disabling emotions. But these two women, somehow, found the strength to battle their emotions and get through their respective situations.

Another thing about the dead woman...did anyone notice the corpse's head move when being pulled off the boat and onto the dock? One can also see the dead body breathing. Just a couple of 'errors' in filming, I guess.

I thought all the stories were happeneing at the same time.. Showing a rather bleak set of options.. You could try for love, companionship, a life shared.. and end up like the Judy Dench character, trapped in a nightmare of a depressing lonely flat with a howling baby and a husband who is never there... Or you can protect yourself from that by keeping potential love at bay.. and go home alone on trains in oposit directions.. or, well, you could just as well be dead. Who had the better start to their day out of our lead characters?
And yes, I'm afraid I did notice the head move, but it didn't spoil it.
