Holland's Opus...

Has anyone besides me seen the striking similarity between this film and "Mr Holland's Opus"? I was watching "...Opus" the other night and suddenly realized that I was watching what amounted to a remake of this movie - different place and time, modified locale, but with the same theme of giving, giving, and eventually fulfilling a dream - one that the main character never imagined would ever occur.

I noticed this too. This film must have inspired the ending for Mr Holland's Opus. Notice that both Lem and Mr Holland have protoges that become governrs.

Very interesting similarity that I hadn't noticed -- thanx for pointing it out.

Yes, I saw this movie after I saw MHO and the similarities are irrefutable. It's surprising how few people have noticed the nearly identical final scenes. I think the fact that they were both Disney productions is the only thing that prevents a highly winnable plagiarism suit. (That said, I still enjoy MHO better, perhaps because Holland's reaction to Lennon's death really touched a nerve with me.)

And in both movies one of the youngsters appeared at the end now the govenor of the state. Quite a coincidence.

Yes, this movie's plot was explicitly borrowed for Mr. Holland's Opus.

In the interest of time, let's agree to disagree--even though I'm always right.

I love both movies too. Never bothered me that they were similar. FMB definitely inspired the writer of Mr. Holland's Opus.

I watched it for the first time last night and yes, agree about the similarity. I was thinking that exact thing during the end of the movie and glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.
