What happened to the Proteus, The Prop?

Just curious because they show everyone boarding it and whatnot, so it wasn't a model they did forced perspective on or anything like that. So what happened to the full sized prop?

Seems like it would have been a natural to send to premiers and even just store for possible use in another movie.

Anyone?

According to Phil Broad, the full sized sub was last know to have been canibalized (sadly disfigured) as a "rescue sub" for the "Poseidon Adventure" (though never used), and probably ended being cut up for scrap.

There's not much evidence to support that story, and it may be just another Hollywood myth. There's a lively discussion on that topic here:

Sad. That kind of thing is why Kubrick destroyed all the sets and props he used in 2001. He didn't want them re-painted and used in some lesser piece of hackwork.

Although the full-size Proteus mockup has probably long since been scrapped, at least two of the original miniature models used in the film are still around, and safe in the hands of private collectors.

Since the full-size Proteus was 42 feet long and weighed several tons, it would have been rather awkward to schelp to movie theaters.

How could a mere movie prop weigh several tons?

It's like in the movie "The Core" the bombs they carried on the ship set were heavy and in one scene when they were supposed to roll on someone's foot they actually caused an actor to get a sore ankle......

Here I am thinking it's a fake bomb why make it out of heavy stuff why not plastic?

The thing was made of structural steel framing, wood and fiberglass. Plus, consider the weight of all the interior fittings. Unlike most prop vehicles in movies, the Proteus had a complete interior, with "wild" or removable sections to allow filming.
