What happened? The crew walked through a red-lit tunnel lined with styrofoam pyramids.

I suppose the idea was to expose them to radiation that killed any microorganisms on the outside of their bodies, thus reducing the risk of infecting Benes with some disease. Of course, the human body is teeming with millions of bacteria on the inside, some of which are essential to life and health (like the intestinal flora in our digestive systems). So, yes, it did seem rather pointless.

All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

What did you expect? Big flashes of light and high energy pulses of sound? Real world sterilization processes don't really make all activity to see or hear. The movie was trying to be more real, not be a special effects extravaganza. Excepting the inner body scenes of course.

In the book I think it was supposed to use UV light or something of that kind to kill anything on their skin. But as you say, that won't help much if they're carrying bugs around inside their bodies.

Sterilization was necessary in case the bacteria on their bodies failed to shrink, and gobbled them up before they could get injected. Also to prevent any pregnancies aboard. :o)
