No but the 3D is stunning on the big screen and pretty good on 3D TV.

Personally, I LOVE the film... but I'm the first to admit it's not a good movie. Essentially it's a feature-length remake of the 1964 "Twilight Zone" episode "Stopover in a Quiet Town" -- which is kinda bizarre since the script for "The Bubble" was penned in 1961. Running 25 minutes, the TZ episode felt kind of long, so at 90 minutes the film is downright tedious at times. In addition to the slow pacing, tissue-paper thin plot and talky nature of the story (it was written/directed by Arch Oboler, who was a well known stage and radio writer), numerous off-the-wall gimmicky 3D events occur in the film which completely defy logic... and absolutely no attempt is made to explain them.

If I'm being brutally honest, Oboler's earlier film, "The Twonky," is a much better movie. It's still not a good movie, but the story feels more original, the pacing's pretty on-the-mark, the characters are well developed, and there's a lot of really fun moments. "The Bubble," on the other hand, is one ginormous exercise in style over substance... but man, has it got style!

Awful acting, the sets and props appear to be whatever was lying around and the story doesn't make much sense. It's really just a showcase for the SpaceVision 3D system and for that alone, it's worth seeing.
Watching it in 2D, after 15 minutes you'd want to kill yourself.

 So, you hated the movie, then?

What's SpaceVision 3D? I've never heard of that before.

Spacevision was the single camera/projection 3D system invented by Col. Robert V. Bernier but only used on a few movies. In addition to remarkably good 3D (for me, the best I've ever seen) it also provided widescreen images without the need for anamorphic lenses or special masking.
I don't hate "The Bubble": it's just not a very good movie. However, seen in 3D, preferably on a big screen, the 3D effects are (literally) outstanding. It's one of the few 3D movies where objects really do float out of the screen. Even on 3D TV, although diminished, it's still pretty good.
Spacevision was also used on "Flesh for Frankenstein" but the movie's owners don't seem to want to pay for the necessary restoration/realignment so I doubt it will ever appear on Blu-ray.
Spacevision was the basis for the single camera 3D systems used in the 80s 3D revival, e.g. Stereovision etc.

why did they stop using it?

it sounds cool.

I'm not really sure but it may be that it was too late for the first 3D boom and a bit too early for the second.
The inventive Col. Bernier had been working on a single camera system in 1953 called Naturama but no one was interested. Most of the big studios had developed their own dual camera systems and stuck with them. If they'd gone with a single camera system many of the projection problems wouldn't have arisen and the history of 3D might have been very different.
I've read that only one Spacevision camera attachment still exists but I don't know how true it is.
Full credit to Arch Oboler who kicked off the 50s 3D stampede with "B'wana Devil" and stuck with it on and off, until the 70s. An indifferent film-maker he may have been but he knew how to pull a crowd.

I saw this 1977 movie called Julia on Netflix last night.

Have you seen the movie, "Julia?"

reply

Not that I know of, although coincidentally I have seen a 3D movie called "Julia X".
